Lyrics:

Peter, Peter, pumpkin-eater
Had a wife, and couldn’t keep her.
He put her in a pumpkin shell,
And there he kept her very well.

Historical Background
“Peter Piper” is a classic tongue-twister. This rhyme practices speech and articulation. In “Literary Leisure, Or Recreations of Solomon Saunter” (1802), satirist Hewson Clarke said the rhyme should be practiced “three times a two without drawing breath,…[rendering] it as useful lesson in the art of elocution.

“Muffin Man” Lyrics:
Oh, do you know the Muffin Man?
The Muffin Man, the Muffin Man.
Oh, do you know the Muffin Man,
That lives in Drury Lane?

Oh, yes, I know the Muffin Man.
The Muffin Man, the Muffin Man.
Oh, yes, I know the Muffin Man,
That lives in Drury Lane.

Historical Background
The first known publication of “Do You Know the Muffin Man” was printed in an 1820 British manuscript, preserved in the Bodleian Library, the main research library at the University of Oxford. Famous for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, “Drury Lane” is an actual street in London. The “Muffin Man” in the rhyme presumably alludes to a muffin man who delivered muffins door-to-door, much like a milk man delivering milk in America. During the mid-nineteenth century, the rhyme gained immense popularity, primarily in America and the Netherlands.

“Pop Goes the Weasel” Lyrics:

Round and round the cobbler’s bench,
The monkey chased the weasel.
The monkey thought it was all in fun.
Pop! Goes the weasel.

A penny for a spool of thread,
A penny for a needle.
That’s the way the money goes.
Pop! Goes the weasel.

Historical Background
Dating back to the 1700s, “Pop Goes the Weasel” originated from Cockney Rhyming Slang, a system of cryptic phrases used by Cockneys and poor Londoners. Rhyming Slang is created by finding a rhyme for a given word, identifying a synonym for the rhyme, and then substituting the synonym for the original word. For example, “head” rhymes with “bread,” and the Cockney Rhyming Slang for “head” is “loaf.” Cockneys created the secret slang because of their suspicion of strangers and strong dislike for the police. “Pop” is the slang word for pawn, and “weasel” originates from “weasel and stout,” meaning coat. During difficult financial times, poor commoners would pawn their suits on Mondays and reclaim it before Sunday in order to be properly dressed for church. Thus, the birth of the saying “Pop Goes the Weasel.”

Simple Simon met a pieman
Going to the fair;
Said Simple Simon to the pieman,
“Let me taste your ware.”
