I was very excited to try the Greenworks 40-Volt Cordless trimmer. I have been investigating rechargeable trimmers for a couple of year, but I have always been worried about battery life and overall power. Greenworks solves this by using a massive 40-volt 4 amp hour lithium battery. It delivers plenty of charge and muscle to make relatively quick work of my 1 acre yard.
Notes –
– Lots of power UNLESS you are in heavy grass. At times I have felt the Greenworks bog down *slightly*. However, it really has the power for everything that I need…. I am impressed.
– Battery life – more than enough battery life to do my 1 acre yard. This is more impressive than it sounds, since a large portion of our yard has a fence that requires lots of trimming.
– One key – is that a rechargeable trimmer turns on and off with a squeeze of a trigger – unlike a 2 or 4-cycle trimmer that must be started and run continuously. This reduces the fatigue in your hands. Typically, after using a 2 or 4-cycel trimmer my hands feel *tingly* from all of the vibrations in the motor. The rechargeable trimmer reduces this dramtically.
– Weight – remember the battery is huge, so the Greenworks is only about 10-20% lighter than my gas powered trimmer. The big difference is that it is much more balanced, unlike a gas powered version that has all of the weight in the motor.
– The trim Head – rotates and pivots! I love this you can adjust the head for the proper trimming angle.
– Edging – Because the head of the trimmer rotates and pivots (and it has a wheel) the Greenworks can turn into an edger. This can be seen in the video portion.
– Guard – The guard on the Greenworks is HUGE – probably 2-3X bigger than my Troybilt. It does add safety, but it does make it more difficult to trim in small and tight spots.
– The Spool/cord – To me, this is easily the biggest negative to the Greenworks trimmer. The cord can be advanced two ways -by pushing a button on the side of the spool or pressing and releasing the trigger. I will say that toggling through the trigger doesn’t always work perfectly. This is compounded by the inability to use any other 3rd-party spool. I was hoping to use the Shakespeare 4-line plug in cord.
– The proprietary cord does not hold up well when used against rocks or bricks… meaning you will burn through your cord pretty quickly.
Final Verdict- The Greenworks 40-Volt Cordless trimmer is nearly perfect if it wasn’t for the cord/spool. The positives are numerous – it can be used as edger, it has lots of power, and it has a long lasting battery.
